Wignacourt Tower: A Visitor's Guide to St Paul's Bay's Watchtower

Wignacourt Tower is a short stop rather than a half-day out: a compact watchtower on the St Paul's Bay seafront holding a small museum of Malta's coastal fortifications. Allow around half an hour to 45 minutes for the tower and its displays, and treat it as one piece of a longer walk along the bay. This guide covers where the tower stands, how to reach it, what is inside and what to see nearby.

What Wignacourt Tower is

The tower was built in 1610 under Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt to defend St Paul's Bay, the stretch of coast traditionally associated with the Apostle Paul's shipwreck on Malta. It was the first of six coastal watchtowers funded by the Order of St John against Ottoman and corsair raids, and it served as the first major fortification in the north of the island. An artillery battery was added in 1715 to strengthen the position.

The tower is also known as St Paul's Bay Tower and as Torri ta' Wignacourt in Maltese, so signposts and listings may use any of the three. The building itself is modest in size, so go for the setting and the story rather than for scale. Before travelling, confirm that the site is open.

Where the tower stands

The address is Triq San Franġisk, St Paul's Bay, on the waterfront. In practice you look for it on the seafront promenade between St Paul's Bay proper, Buġibba and Qawra, which makes it easy to fold into a coastal walk rather than a detour inland. Use the street name rather than the tower name when asking directions, because the seafront strip is long and the building is low.

Because the tower sits on the northern resort strip, it works well as a stop during a day based in Buġibba or Qawra. If you are planning the wider area, our guide to Qawra Attractions: 7 Visitor Guides sets out other sights on the same Qawra peninsula, a short continuation of the seafront.

Getting there

Sponsored

The simplest approach is along the St Paul's Bay seafront, then a short walk along the promenade to the tower. Bus routes and frequencies change, so check the current network on the day you travel rather than relying on an old printout.

From the Qawra end, the tower is a level walk along the waterfront, which suits anyone already visiting the peninsula. Walk it in the morning or late afternoon in summer, when the heat is easier to manage.

Opening hours and tickets

The listed visiting hours are Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 13:00, which is a narrow window and does not cover weekends. Treat those times as what the listing states and confirm them before you build a morning around the visit, particularly outside the main season.

One visitor account reports an entry fee of €2, which is modest enough that the cost is unlikely to decide your plans. It is not an official tariff, so check the current charge at the door or on the trust's property page before you set out.

What to see inside

Inside, the tower holds displays on the construction and history of the building and on Malta's wider coastal fortification system. The upper level gives you sea views across St Paul's Bay, which is the reward for the climb.

Expect a small interior with limited room to move around, so it is not a place to linger with a large group. There is a telephone number listed for the site if you need to ask about access before arriving.

How much time to allow

Budget 30 to 45 minutes for the tower, its displays and the views from the top. That is long enough to read the panels properly and short enough that the visit fits between other stops on the same morning. If the tower turns out to be shut when you arrive, the seafront walk itself still justifies the trip.

What's nearby

The bay seafront is the obvious pairing: a flat promenade running between St Paul's Bay, Buġibba and Qawra. For a different kind of stop on the same peninsula, the Malta National Aquarium at Ta' Fra Ben on Triq it-Trunciera is a short drive or a longer walk round the coast.

For a quieter contrast to the built-up resort strip, Salina National Park lies along the coast at Salina. The Qawra Tower, another coastal watchtower, is close enough to combine with Wignacourt if you are following the fortification story along the northern coast.

Kennedy Grove, Qawra provides a shaded pause with trees and paths if the seafront heat gets to you. For the coast at its most open, Qawra Point at Ras il-Qawra marks the end of the peninsula and gives you a clear view back along the bay.

The Salina Catacombs near Naxxar are a short trip inland if you want more of Malta's underground history. Our round-up of things to do in Qawra covers the rest of the peninsula if you want to fill a full day around this stop.

Is Wignacourt Tower worth the stop?

Yes, if you are already on the northern seafront and you like small, specific places with a story attached. The weekday morning window and the compact interior mean it should be a stop on a walk rather than the purpose of a journey. Build it into a morning between Buġibba and Qawra, and the €2 reported charge and half-hour visit cost you very little.

If you are coming from further afield, pair it with the aquarium or the Salina reserve so the trip has more than one anchor. Confirm current opening before setting out.
