Gozo Museum of Archaeology in Victoria's Citadel

The Gozo Museum of Archaeology is a museum of the island's cultural history from prehistoric times to the early modern period, housed in the 17th-century Casa Bondì immediately behind the original gateway to the Citadel in Victoria. It has closed its doors to prepare for its successor, the Gozo Museum, so a visit today means understanding what stood there and what still operates on the premises. This page covers the building, the collection, the practicalities of reaching the Citadel and the nearby sites that remain open.

Where the museum sits inside the Citadel

The entrance address is Triq Bieb l-Imdina, inside the Citadel in Victoria, the Gozo capital also known as Rabat. The building is a two-storey 17th-century townhouse that belonged to the Bondì family, and its position just behind the old gate puts it on the main approach into the walled enclosure. If you are working out how the Citadel is laid out, start with the Gozo Citadel (Iċ-Ċittadella), Victoria before hunting for individual doorways.

The house initially served as a town hall where the Knights of St John entertained their distinguished guests, and Sir Harry Luke arranged its restoration in 1937 after a long period of neglect. Heritage Malta records that the building took on the archaeological collection in 1986 as part of a reorganisation that split the Citadel's museum collections between separate buildings. Visit Gozo describes the museum that opened in Casa Bondì in May 1960 as the first public museum in Gozo.

The closure and the move to the new Gozo Museum

Heritage Malta states that the museum closed on Monday 13 April to prepare for what it calls the next phase, the Gozo Museum. The museum shop stays open temporarily and Hypogeum tickets continue to be sold from the same premises, so the doorway is not entirely shut to the public. The Ċittadella combo ticket is described as unchanged, which matters if you were planning to combine several Citadel sites on one admission.

The replacement project is being built around the former Ninu Cremona Boys Lyceum, a 1950s modernist school by Joseph Huntingford, and the design team gives the project an end date of 2027, having redesigned the scheme after a Punic and Roman quarry was found on the site. Treat any precise visitor opening date as unconfirmed.

What the galleries covered

The permanent display was divided into three sections: Prehistory, the Classical Period, and the Medieval and Early Modern periods. The ground floor handled the Neolithic, Temple Period and Bronze Age, running from around 5200 to 700BC, and framed the material around burial, religion, art, food and daily life drawn from sites across Gozo.

The Classical gallery held Phoenician, Punic and Roman objects found on Gozo and Comino, including burial items, statuary and decorative arts. Amphoras recovered from a shipwreck and a Romulus and Remus statuette are among the pieces the museum's own online story highlights, which makes them useful fixed points if you are reading up before or after a Citadel visit.

The route ended with medieval and early modern material, closing on the arrival of the Knights of St John. The Majmuna tombstone is one of the named objects associated with this stretch; its find spot is given as allegedly between Xewkija and Ta' Sannat rather than a confirmed location.

Prehistoric statuettes and where the rest are

Some prehistoric statuettes were displayed in this museum, while the majority are shown at the Ġgantija Temples Interpretation Centre. If small figurative carvings are your reason for climbing to the Citadel, plan the Xagħra site into the same trip rather than expecting the whole set in Victoria.

How long to allow and what accessibility is like

The collection is described as modest, so a focused walk-through of the three sections fits comfortably into a Citadel stop rather than eating an afternoon. Heritage Malta lists this as a dedicated museum, and it is best paired with the wider circuit of the enclosure so you still have time for the cathedral and the lanes around Cathedral Square.

Heritage Malta flags the building as partially accessible, noting that some areas cannot be fully reached by visitors with mobility impairment. The site has indoor and outdoor seating areas, which is worth knowing if part of your group will wait while others go round. Anyone with specific access needs should raise them with Heritage Malta before travelling.

Getting to the Citadel from Victoria

Sponsored

The nearest bus stop is five minutes on foot from the site, and the climb up from central Victoria is short but uphill. The Citadel sits above the town, so give yourself a little margin in hot weather rather than sprinting the last stretch to the gate.

Victoria itself is compact enough to cross on foot, and the walk between Independence Square in Victoria, Gozo and the Citadel entrance takes only a few minutes. Use the square as a meeting point if your group splits between the shops and the hill.

Nearby in the Citadel

Heritage Malta lists the Gran Castello Historic House, the Old Prison and the Gozo Nature Museum as its other sites close by, all within the same walled enclosure. With the archaeology museum closed, these are the practical substitutes for a Citadel morning.

The Old Prison in Gozo sits by Cathedral Square and is an easy add-on once you are through the gate. Pair it with the cathedral interior and you can cover the Citadel's main indoor stops without leaving the walls.

For a break between sites, the Villa Rundle Garden, Victoria, Gozo gives you trees and benches a short walk down from the Citadel. It is the obvious place to sit out the middle of the day before climbing back up.

Filling out a Victoria day

Sponsored

Below the Citadel, St George's Basilica, Victoria, Gozo and St Augustine Church, Victoria, Gozo anchor the older streets of the town and are worth a look if you are already in the centre. Both are working churches, so keep shoulders and knees covered.

The Teatru Astra in Victoria, Gozo and the folklore museum Gozo round out the town's cultural stops if you have a full day rather than a half. Neither replaces the archaeological collection, but they keep the day varied when the Citadel's headline museum is shut.

St Francis Church, Victoria, Gozo is another short detour near the centre, and the Victoria Attractions: 11 Visitor Guides page maps the rest of the town's sites if you want to sequence them properly.

Confirming hours and tickets before you travel

Opening hours, admission prices and the exact terms of the Ċittadella combo ticket are published by Heritage Malta, and they should be checked on its site before you set out. The same applies to Hypogeum tickets sold from the museum shop, which are worth securing well ahead if Ħal Saflieni is on your list.

Is the archaeology museum worth the climb now?

Not as a museum visit: the doors are shut while the collection waits for the new Gozo Museum. Make the climb for the Citadel instead, take in the cathedral, the Old Prison and the Gran Castello Historic House, and use the shop for Hypogeum tickets or the combo ticket if those are on your plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still buy Hypogeum tickets at the museum?

Heritage Malta says Hypogeum tickets continue to be available from the same premises while the museum is closed, and the museum shop stays temporarily open. Check with Heritage Malta before making the trip, as the shop's arrangement is described as temporary.

Where did the Majmuna tombstone come from?

The museum gives its find spot as allegedly between Xewkija and Ta' Sannat in Gozo. The wording matters: it is not a confirmed location, so treat any firmer claim you read elsewhere with caution.

What is replacing the old museum?

A new Gozo Museum is being built around the former Ninu Cremona Boys Lyceum, a modernist school designed in the 1950s by Joseph Huntingford, with a design that incorporates a Punic and Roman quarry found on the site. The design team gives the project a 2027 end date; a precise public opening date is not confirmed.
