How to pick Gozo neighbourhoods for a harbour or hill stay

Gozo divides neatly by what sits on the doorstep. Xagħra puts the Ġgantija temple plateau and a café-lined square within a short walk of each other, while Għajnsielem sits on the slope above Mġarr harbour, an uphill walk with luggage that pays off on ferry days. Between them, the coast offers swimming and the west offers quiet.

Bays on this island are rarely sandy. In Xlendi you swim from rock slabs, ladders and a diving board over deep, clear water, with a seafood quay and a short climb to a 17th-century watchtower behind you. Marsalforn works the same way: rocky entry, with the nearest sand around a kilometre west in Xwejni Bay, and a promenade for evenings.

Villages away from the water tend to need a car or bus. Għarb, Gozo's westernmost village, keeps Ta' Pinu Sanctuary and the Wied il-Mielaħ arch on its fringes but has no beach or evening scene. San Lawrenz serves chiefly as a base for Dwejra Bay, where the Inland Sea, Blue Hole and Fungus Rock sit a short drive away. Sannat's church, square and narrow lanes take about an hour, and most people use it for Ta' Ċenċ.

Which Gozo village suits your trip

Late ferries and stopovers point to Għajnsielem or Mġarr, where buses leave from the terminal doorstep and the marina walk and Lourdes Chapel fill half a day. Swimmers and divers should look at Xlendi; couples and small groups with a car tend to like Nadur's ridge-top square and the small bays on the slope below, remembering the uphill return from the coast.

Walkers who want a village base without daily driving will find Xagħra easiest, since the temples and the square are both on foot. Anyone set on Dwejra should treat San Lawrenz as a car-based base. Note that Fort Chambray at Mġarr is a residence you cannot simply walk into.

One day on Gozo, planned around the heat

Give the morning to Xagħra: the Ġgantija plateau is exposed, so midday heat is the thing to plan around, and the café-lined square is the place to leave that slot. Then drive west to Xlendi for a swim from the ladders and slabs, seafood on the quay and the watchtower climb.

If your day starts or ends with the ferry, add Għajnsielem or Mġarr either side, allowing half a day for each. Both are short visits: a ten-minute climb to Lourdes Chapel gives you the harbour view.
