Sliema neighbourhoods: plan a harbour-side stay

Sliema's sights fan out along the water. Tigné Point sits at the tip of the peninsula, car-free, with a piazza, a large mall and restored fortifications around it, all free to wander, and the view across to Valletta is the draw. From there the seafront runs back through The Strand, the harbour-front road that carries you to the Valletta ferry, and on towards quieter edges.

Water shapes the rest. Fond Ghadir cuts rock pools and bolted ladders into the limestone along Tower Road, giving onto deep, clear water with cafés above; bring water shoes, as the rock is sharp and slippery, and allow half a day. Qui-Si-Sana takes a slow hour: gardens and a flat promenade over a small rocky shoreline, where swimming waits on council water-quality notices.

Beyond Sliema, three harbour towns work as bases rather than stops. Gżira sits between Msida and Sliema, handy for the ferry and a waterfront walk to Manoel Island, though it has no beach of its own. Ta' Xbiex is a calm headland on Marsamxett Harbour with a refurbished promenade, marina and gardens, better for evening strolls than restaurants or shops. Msida, a working harbour and university town west of Valletta, is practical for commuters, and its walk from marina to campus is steeper than most expect.

Matching a Sliema base to your trip

For ferry hops and shops on the doorstep, The Strand works, though a rear room keeps daytime traffic at bay. Fond Ghadir suits confident swimmers and paddlers; Qui-Si-Sana suits walkers who want a calm, residential seafront.

Across the harbour towns, Gżira is the quieter base near the ferry, Ta' Xbiex the calm waterfront headland, and Msida the choice for university visitors and Valletta commuters.

One day in Sliema and its neighbours

Start at Tigné Point, free to enter and flat to walk, with the Valletta view as the reward; give it half a day. Carry on to Fond Ghadir if you swim, or to Qui-Si-Sana for an hour on the promenade. Use The Strand to reach the ferry, and add Ta' Xbiex for an evening stroll along the marina.
