Ta' Ġiorni, St Julian's: What the District Is Like and Who It Suits

Ta' Ġiorni is a residential district on the edge of St Julian's near Balluta Bay, and it suits travellers who want an apartment base within walking distance of the coast rather than a resort address. Expect ordinary streets, small guesthouses and self-catering flats, with the sea a short walk downhill. This guide covers what the district is like, who it fits, how it is laid out and what sits within walking distance.

The main trade-off is proximity against calm: you are close to the St Julian's and Sliema waterfronts, but the seafront road is a busy one that you may have to cross on foot to reach the water. If you want a lobby, a pool and a promenade at the door, look elsewhere in the area. If you want space, a kitchen and a local neighbourhood, the district can work well.

What Ta' Ġiorni is and where it sits

The district sits inland of the coast near St Julian's, with Balluta Bay below it and the Sliema seafront to the south-east. Listings variously describe the same set of streets as St Julian's, Gżira or Sliema, so treat the locality name on a booking as a hint rather than a precise pin.

That overlap matters when you compare places to stay: a property labelled Sliema may sit closer to Balluta Bay than to the Sliema ferries, and one labelled Gżira may be nearer the university than the Gżira waterfront. Check the street and the map pin before you book. The wider St Julian's area is covered in our St Julian's Neighbourhoods: 6 Area Guides if you want to compare districts side by side.

Who the district suits and who it does not

Ta' Ġiorni fits travellers who plan to self-cater and use the coast on foot rather than by car. The apartment-heavy stock suits couples and small groups who want a kitchen and a washing machine. It is less suitable if you want a full-service hotel with a pool downstairs, or if you dislike crossing a busy road to reach the sea.

It also suits people who want to be between two centres rather than inside either: St Julian's for its waterfront and Sliema for its shopping and ferries are both a walk away. If you would rather have quieter residential streets further from traffic, Swieqi: What the Area Is Like and What Suits a Stay is the neighbouring comparison. Pembroke, Malta sits on the other side of St Julian's and trades convenience for a more open setting.

How the district is laid out

Sponsored

The streets climb from Balluta Bay up towards the St Julian's and Gżira sides, so most walks out of the district involve a slope in one direction. The lower streets near the seafront road put you closest to the water and the buses; the upper residential streets are quieter and further from the traffic. When choosing an address, decide which of those two you want, because the difference shapes every walk you make.

Above the district, St Julian's continues towards Spinola Bay and Portomaso, where the waterfront changes character entirely. Those are separate areas with their own feel, so do not assume a Ta' Ġiorni address puts you on the bay. Use the map to check whether your street sits on the Balluta side or further inland towards Gżira.

What is within walking distance

Balluta Bay is the nearest stretch of coast for most of the district, a downhill walk to a small bay with a promenade and a landmark church above it. From there the Sliema seafront runs south-east towards the Sliema ferries and The Point Shopping Mall, a long but fairly level walk along the water. The university area of Msida lies inland to the south-west.

The St George's Bay side of St Julian's is further round the coast, beyond the busy coast road, so plan by the map rather than by a schedule. If you intend to rely on foot for the whole stay, pick a street on the Balluta side.

Where to eat and drink in the district

Eating in Ta' Ġiorni is mostly a matter of small local places and the clusters around Balluta Bay and the Gżira waterfront, with the wider choice in St Julian's and Sliema a walk away. For a specific restaurant, check the menu and hours directly with the venue on the day.

The practical rhythm is breakfast and lunch near home and dinner out towards the coast, which keeps the uphill walk for daylight. Book nothing on the assumption that a particular kitchen is open, because small places change their hours by season.

Where to stay in Ta' Ġiorni

The district's accommodation is dominated by apartments, guesthouses and aparthotels rather than full-service hotels. Named examples placed in Ta' Ġiorni include Lokali Rooms, The Sliema Suites, Central Suites St. Julian's, Evolve Coliving Guesthouse and Island Guesthouse, while Aparthotel Adagio Malta Central and Blubay Apartments by ST Hotels appear under nearby Gżira and Msida addresses. Rates move with dates, so compare for your own nights.

Two things decide whether a flat here works: whether it faces the seafront road, and how far uphill it sits from the bay. Ask about both before booking, and read recent guest comments about traffic and access rather than relying on the photos. Confirm what facilities are actually included with your booking rather than assuming from photographs.

Getting there and getting around without a car

Most visitors reach the district by road from the airport or Valletta, then walk. Bus stops line the coast road at Balluta and along the Sliema seafront, which puts the main bus corridors within reach of the lower streets but leaves the upper district a climb. If you are arriving late with luggage, take a taxi or transfer to the door rather than walking up from the coast.

Walking is the sensible way to move between Ta' Ġiorni, Balluta Bay, Sliema and Gżira, and the Sliema seafront puts the Sliema ferries within reach on foot. For anything further, use the buses from the seafront road rather than trying to park in the district. Confirm current routes and times with the operator before you travel, since services change by season.

Noise, traffic and the seafront road

Sponsored

The seafront road is the defining nuisance of the district: it separates the residential streets from the water and carries steady traffic, so crossing it takes care and time. Properties on or near that road will hear it, especially at night. Streets further uphill are quieter but add a climb to every trip to the coast.

This is the trade-off to weigh against the convenience: a short walk to the bay and the buses, in exchange for traffic noise and a road crossing. If quiet matters more than proximity, look at the inland streets or compare with Pembroke. If convenience matters more, choose a low street and accept the noise.

Is Ta' Ġiorni the right base for your trip?

Choose Ta' Ġiorni if you want an apartment base within walking distance of Balluta Bay and the Sliema seafront, and you are happy to cross the busy coast road and walk uphill home. Skip it if you want a full-service hotel with a pool at the door or a quiet promenade setting.

To decide, pick a specific street on the map, check its distance to the bay and to the nearest bus stop, and read recent guest comments for traffic noise. Then compare the district with its neighbours, Pembroke for a quieter residential feel or Swieqi further inland, before you book.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Ta' Ġiorni count as St Julian's or Sliema?

It is a residential district near St Julian's whose streets are described differently by different listings, so the same area appears under St Julian's, Gżira and Sliema names. Judge a property by its street and map pin rather than by the town name in the address.

Can you walk from Ta' Ġiorni to the sea?

Yes. Balluta Bay is a downhill walk for most of the district, and the Sliema seafront continues from there. The catch is the busy seafront road you may have to cross to reach the water, so allow time and choose a crossing point carefully.

Do you need a car in Ta' Ġiorni?

No. The district works on foot, with the coast road buses covering longer trips and the Sliema ferries offering boat connections. Parking in the residential streets is not the reason to bring a car.
