Planning Mellieħa attractions: sights, walks and wartime tunnels

Mellieħa's sights spread from the ridge above the bay out to the headlands, so a first visit works best as a loose loop rather than a checklist. The Sanctuary on the ridge draws the steadiest demand, while Selmun Palace and the air raid shelter sit further apart, each needing its own stretch of time.

Some stops ask for planning. Għadira Nature Reserve is free to enter but shuts entirely from June to August, and the walk up to the Sanctuary from the bay is exposed. The air raid shelter takes about an hour underground, in cool, tight tunnels, so bring shoes with grip.

Selmun Palace has no rooms to tour; the turrets, walled courtyard and the walk towards Selmun Bay's cliffs are the reason to go, and the outing stretches to half a day with the walk. Għajn Tuffieħa Tower rewards steady walkers with clifftop views after a short, steep climb, though its interior opens only on a limited schedule.

Booking is not needed for the Sanctuary. The cave church is a separate building from the red-domed parish church, which is easy to confuse.
