Watch the sunset from Dwejra Bay for the open water and drama, from Xlendi for a bay with the village behind you, or from Ta' Ċenċ for quiet high ground, and consider Sanap Cliffs above Munxar if you want height and can handle a narrow final lane with room for only a couple of cars. This guide takes each spot in turn, gives the practical approach and sets out what the light actually does.

Sunset on Gozo shifts through the year, so treat any single time as that day's figure rather than a season-long schedule. Checking a daily astronomy listing before you set out is the simplest way to work backwards to a departure time from Victoria or Xlendi.

Where to watch the sunset on Gozo: the short answer

Dwejra Bay is the dramatic western option, Xlendi gives you a bay with a village and restaurants a few minutes behind you, and Ta' Ċenċ gives you quiet cliff-top ground. Sanap Cliffs above Munxar sit high on the south coast and reward the awkward drive with a long view, but the final lane is tight enough that you may have to reverse.

If you have one evening and no car, base yourself at Xlendi. If you have a car and want the drama, drive west to Dwejra. If you want silence and a tight final lane, go south to Sanap Cliffs.

Dwejra Bay: open sea views and a west-facing coast

Dwejra sits on Gozo's west coast, towards open water, and is a spot people head to for a sunset. Go there for the horizon itself: you want a clear line to the west and a spot on the rocks or the shoreline where nobody stands in front of you.

Allow time to walk the area before the light turns, because the appeal is the setting as much as the sunset. Bring a torch or use your phone for the walk back to the car; the paths are unlit once the sun is down.

Xlendi Bay: a bay sunset with the village behind you

Xlendi is the easiest of the four because you can watch the light fade over the bay and then eat within a few minutes' walk. That convenience is the trade-off: the bay is enclosed, so you see the sun go down over the water rather than across a wide open horizon.

It is also the starting point for the walk to Sanap Cliffs, roughly an hour along the coastal path if you would rather leave the car behind. Treat that path as an informal coastal route rather than a signposted trail, and start early enough to be back before dark.

Ta' Ċenċ Cliffs: quiet, high cliff ground

Ta' Ċenċ is the quiet option: high cliff ground on the south of the island, with a calm atmosphere and very little around it. Go there when you want the sunset without a crowd or a bar in the frame.

Check the map before you go, because the cliff area is a spread of tracks rather than one marked viewpoint. Our Gozo map sets out how the villages and coast roads connect, which makes planning the drive back simpler.

Sanap Cliffs above Munxar: height, a narrow approach and limited parking

Sanap Cliffs are on the south coast above Munxar, and the appeal is the height: the cliffs twist away below you and the sea stretches out ahead. The final road in is narrow enough that you may need to stop and let walkers squeeze past, and there is space for only about two cars at the end. If both spaces are taken, reversing out is the unpleasant part of the trip.

A proper path runs along part of the cliff and is suitable for a wheelchair or pushchair, but it turns to rough ground further on. There are no toilet facilities at Sanap Cliffs, and the drop is sheer in places, so keep children and dogs close and stay back from the edge when the light goes.

If you are building the rest of the day around this coast, our guide to things to do in Gozo fills in the villages and sights between here and Victoria.

Watching from a boat or on a tour: what a sunset tour includes and what it leaves out

Yippee Malta runs a sunset tuk-tuk tour that combines a Comino swim stop with a Gozo circuit in the late afternoon and evening, giving the operator's start as around 2pm and a boat from Gozo at roughly 9pm. Pick-up is offered from Malta or Gozo, and a light traditional Gozitan dinner is included.

That tour is priced at €85 per adult, €60 for children aged 3 to 12 and free for infants, with a €25 per person deposit and free cancellation up to 24 hours before pick-up. The operator runs it between mid-April and mid-October and describes it as in high demand, so book early for those months.

What it leaves out is the self-drive freedom: you are on a fixed route with a driver and a timetable, so you will not linger at one cliff until the last of the light. If you want to choose your own spot and stay until the sky goes dark, drive yourself.

Sunset time on Gozo and how much daylight you have before it

Sunset moves through the year, so look up the daily figure rather than relying on a season-long guess. On the day this was checked, sunset on Gozo was listed as 5:14pm, with 10 hours and 56 minutes of daylight and the day shortening slightly.

Work backwards from that time: allow the drive, then 30 to 45 minutes on foot before the light turns, because the interesting colour comes well before the sun touches the water. Add another 20 minutes after sunset for the walk back to the car in fading light.

Getting to each spot: by car, on foot from Xlendi, or by tour pick-up

Dwejra and Ta' Ċenċ both need a car or a lift, since neither is a short walk from a village centre. Sanap Cliffs can be reached on foot from Xlendi in about an hour along the coastal path, which avoids the narrow lane and the parking spaces entirely, but means walking back after dark.

Xlendi needs no planning at all: park in the village and walk to the water. If you are coming over from Malta for the evening, check the last crossing before you commit, because a sunset finish leaves little margin for the return.

Our Gozo tours page covers the organised options if you would rather not drive after dark. For a broader sense of what the island offers beyond the sunset hour, start with the Gozo attractions hub.

What to bring and the practical snags at each spot

Bring a light layer even on a warm day, because exposed cliff ground cools quickly once the sun is low. Wear shoes with grip for the rough sections beyond the proper path at Sanap Cliffs, and carry water if you are walking in from Xlendi.

The other snag is the drive home: minor Gozo roads are unlit and narrow, and the lane down from Sanap Cliffs is the worst of them. Decide before you go who is driving and keep that person off the wine.

Which Gozo sunset spot should you choose?

Choose Xlendi if you want the simplest evening with food nearby, Dwejra if you want the open western horizon, and Ta' Ċenċ if you want quiet high ground. Pick Sanap Cliffs only if you are comfortable with a narrow final lane, limited parking and a rough path, because the height is the reward and the access is the cost.

Whatever you choose, check the day's sunset time, leave enough daylight to walk the ground first, and plan the return before the light goes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What time is sunrise in Gozo?

Sunrise shifts through the year just as sunset does, so use a daily astronomy listing for the date you are travelling rather than a fixed figure. On the day this was checked, sunrise on Gozo was listed as 6:18am.

Is Sanap Cliffs suitable for young children?

Take care. The drop is sheer in places and the path becomes rough beyond the surfaced section, and there are no toilet facilities on site. Keep children close and stay well back from the edge, particularly as the light fades.
