Mdina attractions: plot your walk through the silent city

Mdina's sights reward a slow, linear walk rather than a checklist. The Main Gate brings you in at the hilltop, St Paul's Cathedral anchors the centre, and the ground falls away at Bastion Square on the outer wall edge, where the whole main island opens up below.

Some of the best pauses cost nothing: Greek's Gate, approached from Rabat, Bastion Square and the cathedral itself. Others need forethought. A single €15 ticket covers St Paul's Cathedral and its museum, bought at the museum in Archbishop's Square, while Palazzo Falson charges €12.50 for adults with an audio guide included.

Timing matters more than distance. The cathedral museum closes on Sundays and public holidays, Palazzo Vilhena shuts on Mondays, and Casa Gourgion's doors close half an hour before its 17:00 finish. Palazzo Falson turns away children under six, and Mdina Dungeons is best for adults who want a grim contrast to the cathedral quarter.

Spread your stops across the walled city: a 60 to 90 minute natural history visit at Vilhena Palace, a 45 to 75 minute house-museum stop at Casa Gourgion, and a twenty-minute pause at Torre dello Standardo on the way past. The streets themselves are the connective tissue.

Palazzo Falson, Mdina: A Historic House Museum Guide

Captain Gollcher's lived-in 13th-century house in Mdina, packed with silver, arms, rugs and paintings rather than labelled cases. Entry includes an audio guide, but children under six are turned away at the door.

    60-90 minutes · adult €12.50; students and seniors €6; under 6 not admitted · Best for slow-looking house-museum fans

  • St Paul's Square and the cathedral in Mdina.

Mdina Dungeons: Inside the Old Prison Chambers

An underground walk-through of staged murder and torture scenes beneath Mdina, built for atmosphere rather than authentic cells. Adults wanting a short, deliberately grim contrast to the cathedral quarter will get the point; young children will not.

around half an hour · Paid entry · Best for adults seeking a grim detour

  • Mesquita Square in Mdina.

Bastion Square, Mdina: The Viewpoint and What's Nearby

A wall-edge opening inside Mdina where the ground falls away to reveal a broad stretch of the main island below. There is no ticket or interior, so treat it as the closing pause of a city walk.

15-20 minutes · Free · Best for island views at end of walk

  • Casa Gourgion in Mdina.

Casa Gourgion, Mdina: a Neo-Gothic House Museum on Pjazza San Pawl

A Neo-Gothic nobleman's home on Mdina's main square, restored with its sala, library and rooftop terrace looking over the cathedral dome. Allow 45 to 75 minutes, and arrive before 16:30 since doors close half an hour early.

  • Vilhena Palace in Mdina, home of the National Museum of Natural History.

National Museum of Natural History, Mdina: Visitor Guide

60-90 minutes · adults €5.00, children 6-11 €2.50 · Best for geology, fossils and wildlife fans

  • The forecourt of Palazzo Vilhena in Mdina.

Palazzo Vilhena, Mdina: Visiting the Natural History Museum

Mdina's Baroque Palazzo Vilhena holds Malta's natural history museum under one ticket. It shuts on Mondays and public holidays, and last admission is 30 minutes before 17:00, so late arrivals miss the galleries entirely.

  • A gate in the old fortifications of Mdina.

Greek's Gate, Mdina: A Visitor's Guide to the Medieval Entrance

Mdina's southwest entrance pairs a medieval inner passage with Mondion's Baroque outer portal, and its mural paintings are easy to walk past while watching the steep ramp. Come up from Rabat, look up, then carry on into the walled city.

5-10 minutes · free entry; public passage · Best for walkers arriving from Rabat

  • The carved doorway of the Banca Giuratale in Mdina.

Banca Giuratale, Mdina: Where It Is and What to See

A 1726 Baroque hall on Triq San Pawl that now houses the National Archives, mostly admired from outside as a ten to twenty minute stop on a Mdina walk. Interior access depends on the archive.

10-20 minutes · Best for walkers touring Mdina's main street

  • Palazzo Santa Sofia in Mdina.

Palazzo Santa Sofia in Mdina: Visiting the Historic Palazzo

A historic palazzo on Triq Santa Sofija in Mdina, best seen from the street as you pass rather than visited inside. It is often confused with Venice's Ca' d'Oro of the same name, so check the address before setting out.

10-15 minutes · free entry · Best for walkers on a Mdina city loop

  • The Torre dello Standardo in Mdina.

Torre dello Standardo, Mdina: A Visitor's Guide to the Standard Tower

A compact stone tower on Mdina's fortified edge, reached by a short walk from the Main Gate past the cathedral. Give it twenty minutes and treat it as punctuation in a wider circuit, but check access first — no hours or ticket details are published.

20 minutes · Best for short stop on a Mdina walk

Pairing Mdina's sights on one walk

Begin at Mdina Gate, where the Baroque bridge and carved lions take five to ten minutes. Walk on to Pjazza San Pawl: St Paul's Cathedral, the cathedral museum in Archbishop's Square and Casa Gourgion all sit within a short stretch, so an hour and a half at the museum and a cathedral visit can share a morning. Continue to Villegaignon Street for Palazzo Falson, then Triq San Pawl for Banca Giuratale. Greek's Gate suits an arrival from Rabat rather than a detour, and Bastion Square works best as the closing pause at the wall edge. Torre dello Standardo sits near the cathedral, a twenty-minute stop on the same loop.

What costs nothing in Mdina

Mdina Gate and Greek's Gate are public passages with no charge, though restoration announced in 2023 may cover stonework at Greek's Gate. St Paul's Cathedral is free to enter, with weekday hours from 9.30am to 4.45pm and Sunday afternoons only. Bastion Square has no entrance fee, and Palazzo Santa Sofia is seen from Triq Santa Sofija as you pass.
