Casa Gourgion, Mdina: a Neo-Gothic House Museum on Pjazza San Pawl

Casa Gourgion is an intimate stop, not a full morning out: give it 45 to 75 minutes for the restored rooms and the rooftop terrace. The Neo-Gothic house faces St Paul's Cathedral square on Pjazza San Pawl, and it is now a small museum open Monday to Saturday.

It sits on the main square of Mdina, with the cathedral next door and the lanes and bastions a short walk away. It also works as a licensed wedding venue for small ceremonies, kept separate from the museum visit.

What Casa Gourgion is

Casa Gourgion is a Neo-Gothic nobleman's house on Mdina's main square, restored as a house museum. The EUmies Awards entry for the restoration describes it as one of the most photographed buildings in Mdina, with a Neo-Gothic façade.

The museum focuses on the rooms as a lived-in nobleman's home rather than a gallery of objects: the opulent sala, Pinu's Library, a main bedroom looking over the square, restored ceilings and frescoes, and a rooftop terrace.

Where it is

Sponsored

Casa Gourgion is at 3, Pjazza San Pawl, on the main square of Mdina inside the city walls. The address is a couple of minutes on foot from Mdina Gate and the cathedral, so it pairs easily with a short loop of the city.

Opening hours and ticket prices

The museum publishes opening hours of Monday to Saturday, 10:00 to 17:00, with doors closing 30 minutes before closing time. General admission is €9, with reduced rates for children, seniors and students, a family ticket and a group ticket; guided tours are by appointment only.

Buy your ticket online before you travel, especially if you want a guided tour, because this is booked by appointment only, with a maximum of 10 people. If you are visiting later in the afternoon, treat the doors-closing rule as a hard cut-off: allow for a short walk from Mdina Gate and be inside the courtyard before 16:30.

How to reach it from Mdina Gate

Arriving on foot through Mdina Gate puts you a few minutes from Pjazza San Pawl. Walk straight into the city, follow the lane past the cathedral and turn into the square; the house is the tall Neo-Gothic front opposite the cathedral dome.

What to see inside

The ground floor centres on a shaded courtyard that serves as both entrance and gathering space. Above it, the upper rooms include the sala, Pinu's Library, a main bedroom over the square, and ceilings and frescoes that were repaired in the restoration; the EUmies report records a multi-disciplinary restoration that combined structural reinforcement with concealed air conditioning.

The house is one of several historic house museums in Malta, and if you have time you can compare it with Palazzo Falson in Mdina.

The rooftop terrace

The rooftop terrace is the reason to allow more than a walk-through: it opens a view over Mdina and the cathedral dome, and out across the island. Photographs on the EUmies award entry show the main bedroom overlooking the square and the restored interiors, which give a sense of the scale before you arrive.

How long to allow and whether to book a tour

Budget 45 to 75 minutes for the rooms and the terrace, or a little longer if you stop for the views. Guided tours are available by appointment and limited to 10 people, but no tour price is listed on the museum site, so ask when you enquire.

Accessibility

The courtyard and garden are wheelchair accessible, but the upper floors and rooftop are reached by the historic staircase. That trade-off matters if your group includes someone who cannot manage stairs: one person can wait in the courtyard while the others go up.

Nearby: cathedral, lanes and Rabat

St Paul's Cathedral is immediately opposite on the same square, and together the two make a natural pair. Walk on through Mdina's lanes to Bastion Square for the view over the walls, or drop down through Greek's Gate to Rabat below.

Other nearby options in Mdina include the National Museum of Natural History at Palazzo Vilhena, the Mdina Cathedral Museum and the Mdina Dungeons. Practical points and the wedding venue

Sponsored

Doors close 30 minutes before the published 17:00 closing, and the museum only advertises Monday to Saturday, so do not assume a Sunday visit. Check before you travel on a Sunday.

The house is also a licensed civil wedding venue for up to 30 guests, with the couple booking the Marriage Registry officer separately. Ask the venue directly how wedding bookings affect museum opening on the day.

Should you include Casa Gourgion in a Mdina walk?

Casa Gourgion suits a short, focused visit: a courtyard, a handful of restored rooms and a rooftop terrace that gives you the cathedral from above. If you are already in Mdina for St Paul's Cathedral or the bastions, it is a natural add-on; if you only have an hour in the city, choose either the cathedral or the house rather than both.
