Planning Rabat sightseeing: catacombs, grotto and wooded walks
Rabat's sights sit close together but ask very different things of you: St Paul's Catacombs pull the crowds with rock-cut tombs and narrow corridors on Triq Sant'Agata, while a small cave church and a lived-in palazzo reward those who slow down. Mdina's gates are a short walk uphill, which is why so much of Rabat is seen on foot between the two towns.
Some of the best stops cost nothing. Pjazza San Pawl gives you benches and café tables facing the parish church frontage, a 10-15 minute walk down from Mdina's Main Gate, and the parish church of San Pawl itself takes half an hour if you check Mass times first. St Agatha's Church, minutes from Mdina Gate, is easy to fold into a walk, though its crypt and catacombs next door are ticketed separately.
Others need planning. St Paul's Catacombs take 45 minutes to an hour and a quarter, and a guided tour at Casa Bernard on St Paul Street should be fixed in advance, with Sunday closed. At the Wignacourt Museum door on Triq il-Kulleġġ, one ticket covers the Grotto, church, catacombs, WWII shelters and museum, so set aside a couple of hours.
Beyond the centre, the countryside opens up towards Buskett and the Fiddien valley, where paths are rough and shade is scarce. Take water and stout shoes.

Rabat attraction guides

St Paul's Catacombs, Rabat: Visiting Guide
Rock-cut tombs and narrow corridors beneath Rabat, entered from Triq Sant'Agata. The agape tables carved from living rock stand out more than any single tomb, and low ceilings and uneven floors make grippy shoes essential.
45 minutes to an hour and a quarter · Paid entry · Book ahead · Best for history lovers, archaeology fans

St Paul's Grotto, Rabat: Visiting the Cave Below the Parish Church
A small, dimly lit cave under Rabat's parish church, reached from the main square and holding a marble statue of St Paul plus two tiny chapels. Cover shoulders and watch the steps; access follows the church's own arrangements.
20-30 minutes · described in 2002 as free, donation expected · Best for short atmospheric stop near Mdina

Pjazza San Pawl, Rabat: St Paul's Square Visitor Guide
Rabat's rectangular main square on Triq San Pawl, where benches and café tables face the parish church frontage. It is a 10-15 minute walk down from Mdina's Main Gate, so slot in 15-30 minutes rather than making a separate trip.
15-30 minutes · Free · Best for short pause between Mdina and catacombs

Rabat Parish Church: Visiting St Paul's in Rabat, Malta
The town's working parish church, San Pawl, sits in the centre of Rabat, a short downhill walk from Mdina's gates. Give it half an hour, but check Mass times first so you don't walk in mid-service.
20-30 minutes · Free · Best for church visitors and Mdina walkers

St Agatha's Church, Rabat: Visiting the Church and Crypt
A small chapel in the middle of Rabat village, a few minutes from Mdina Gate and easy to add to a walk between the two towns. The underground crypt and catacombs next door are a separate site with their own tickets.
15-20 minutes · Free · Best for short stop on a Rabat walk

St Paul's Church, Rabat: What to See and How Long It Takes
Enter through the Wignacourt Museum door on Triq il-Kulleġġ, not the church steps: one ticket covers the Grotto, church, catacombs, WWII shelters and museum, so the small cave and long underground corridors take a couple of hours.
a couple of hours · adults €5, students/seniors €3.50, audio guide €2 extra · Best for history-minded visitors okay with steps

Domvs Romana, Rabat: Visiting the Roman Townhouse
A small museum built over a Roman townhouse floor outside Mdina's walls. The peristyle mosaic with its dove emblem and the Claudius sculpture carry the visit, so allow roughly an hour before walking up into Mdina.
45-90 minutes · Paid entry · Best for Roman domestic life and mosaics

Casa Bernard, Rabat: Guided Tour of a 16th-Century Palazzo
A 16th-century palazzo on St Paul Street where the Magri family still lives; visits are by guided tour, so fix a time in advance and note the Sunday closure.
45-60 minutes · Paid entry · Book ahead · Best for travellers who like lived-in houses

Buskett Gardens, Rabat: Woodland Visit Guide
A stony, shaded woodland valley below Verdala Palace, good for a shady walk or picnic when the heat is fierce elsewhere. There are no lawns, few facilities and uneven paths, so bring water and stout shoes.
half a day · Free · Best for shaded walks and picnics

Chadwick Lakes, Rabat: Visiting the Fiddien Valley
A rainfall-fed valley of small dams and channels below Rabat and Mtarfa, walked on a rough 2 km trail with almost no shade. It is best just after winter rain, when the water actually runs.
60-90 minutes · free, open countryside · Best for walkers wanting countryside near Rabat

Verdala Palace: Visiting Malta's Presidential Summer Residence
A working presidential summer residence, so there is no routine public opening: come for the square palace with its four corner towers and rock-cut ditch, then walk the surrounding Buskett pine woodland.
20-30 minutes; 2-3 hours with walk · Best for woodland walkers and exterior photography
Free stops in Rabat and the walks beyond
Pjazza San Pawl, the parish church of San Pawl and St Agatha's Church all welcome visitors without a ticket, and St Paul's Grotto beneath the parish church is reached from the main square, with a donation expected and shoulders to cover. Outside town, Buskett Gardens is a stony, shaded valley below Verdala Palace with no bookable entry, and Chadwick Lakes in the Fiddien valley is open countryside with no gate or ticket desk.
What to reserve before you arrive
St Paul's Catacombs are the busiest site here, so book ahead if your day is fixed. At Casa Bernard on St Paul Street, visits to the 16th-century palazzo are by guided tour only, so agree a time in advance and avoid Sunday. At the Wignacourt Museum, adults pay €5 and students or seniors €3.50, with an audio guide €2 extra; one ticket covers the Grotto, church, catacombs, WWII shelters and museum.
